Arrested by the German Socialists after the invasion of Poland, Brother Józef "Dominik" Zapłata was shipped to Dachau.
Brother Dominik survived the Appeal of Penance, begun on July 16, 1941, when priests and religious were targeted for refusing to register with the Volksdeutsche. And he also survived various purges of the priests in the death camp.
However, after constant starvation, exhaustion and exposure, he perished on February 19, 1945.
