Arrested by the Soviet Socialists, Father Gerhard Witt was forced to march 75 miles, with 500 POWs, in the frigid cold and snow, to a prison camp in Georgenburg, where he was held in horse stables. Transferred to Elbląg, he endured slave labor dismantling the Schichau–Werke factory and shipyard machinery sent to the Soviets. He perished on May 19, 1945.
