6/6/2023 0 Comments June 06th, 2023Father Jose Adolfo Arroyo officiated the final Holy Mass, on July 30, 1926, in Valparaiso, Zacatecas. The Sacraments and even priests were outlawed by the anti-Catholic policies of the Marxist Mexican government, which enacted, under President Plutarco Elías Calles, a statute to enforce the anti-clerical articles of the Mexican Constitution of 1917, that sought to eliminate the power of the Catholic Church. The cruel laws resulted in a civil uprising, the Cristero War (1926–29).

After refusing to take down the Viva Cristo Rey! and Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe! signs posted in his grocery storefront, 66-year-old Jose Garcia Farfan was arrested. The next morning, July 29, 1926, he faced the firing squad. “Now let us see how Catholics die!” mocked General Juan Guadalupe Amaya. “Like this! Viva Cristo Rey!” Farfan responded, clutching his rosary to his heart as guns fired the fatal shots. |
