He had been shot through his lungs, and his legs shredded by dogs. His cassock was found hanging on a nearby tree.

Ordered banished, he was exiled to Uzbekistan, where he lived in severe poverty until his death, in November 1929.

Interrogated many times by the secret police of the NKVD, who unsuccessfully tried to coerce him to cooperate with the Soviets, he was finally arrested. Interrogated and tortured for 2 years, he was sentenced to 10 years in a Siberian gulag and perished March 9, 1948.
