Running from the Soviet Socialist Red Army soldiers, the Sisters of Saint Elżbieta sought shelter in the Poviat Old Folk's Home, which soldiers invaded. Trying to save the honor of a younger Sister, Sister Maria Teodora (born Marianna Witkowska) stood and covered her with her own body, but was fatally shot in the head by the soldier, on January 28, 1945.
