Archbishop Gaspër Thaçi was summoned by the Communist dictator Enver Hoxha, who demanded that the priest separate from Rome and establish a national church for the Albanian government, ruled by the revolutionary Communist Party with its theophobic Socialist ideology of death and destruction.
After refusing, the archbishop was arrested and placed under custody of the regime, and after great suffering, he died on May 26, 1946.
