Nine members of the Ulma family were executed by the German Socialists Gestapo, in the early morning hours of March 24, 1944, for hiding Jews in the attic of their home in the Polish village of Markowa.
The Gestapo killed Józef, Wiktoria and their hysterical children: Stanisława, 8; Barbara, 7; Władysław, 6; Franciszek, 4; Antoni, 3; Maria, 2; and Wiktoria's full-term unborn child who had just begun its journey in the birth canal to life. When the bodies were exhumed within the year, gravediggers discovered that the baby had been born in the grave.
