Although the German Socialists forbid anyone in occupied Poland to rescue Jews -- under penalty of death -- many did, including Father Kazimierz Smoroński, arrested for doing so. Beaten by the Gestapo, he was shipped to Auschwitz, beaten more, tortured, starved, exposed to the elements and left to die, on May 21, 1942.
