In 1927, during the Mexican government’s continuing persecution of the Church, Father Mateo Correa Magallanes was arrested by soldiers as he was bringing Viaticum to an invalid woman. He was arrested for not revealing what prisoners had confessed, even after a gun was pointed at his head. Continuing to refuse, at dawn on February 6, 1927, he was escorted to the cemetery on the outskirts of Durango and shot through the head.
