During the anti-Catholic persecution of the Church in the 1920s and 30s, countless faithful perished and 4,000 priests were martyred in or exiled from revolutionary, pro-Communist Mexico, whose officials had embraced the anti-Christian ideology of Marx and the brutal tactics of Lenin while persecuting Catholics.

NOTE: Where there were 4,500 priests serving the people before the rebellion, in 1934 there were only 334 priests licensed by the government to serve fifteen million people, the rest having been eliminated by emigration, expulsion and assassination.
